Who We Are: Anne Condon

Professor, Computer Science, University of British Columbia

Anne CondonAnne Condon is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of British Columbia and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Strategic Initiatives in the Faculty of Science at UBC. Prior to her appointment
at UBC, Anne was a faculty member in the Computer Sciences Department at University of Wisconsin-Madison (1987-1999). She received her Ph.D. (1987) from University of Washington’s Computer Science Department, and her B.Sc. degree (1982) from University College Cork, Ireland.

Anne’s research contributions span computational complexity theory, hardware verification, biomolecular computation, and combinatorial auctions. Much of her current research focuses on computational prediction of nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) secondary structure, with
applications to design of novel structures and gene synthesis. Anne has won an ACM Distinguished Dissertation Award, an NSF National Young Investigator Award, and the University College Cork Distinguished Alumna Award for her work. She has served on numerous on several editorial and advisory boards, including the Board of Directors of the Computing Research Association and the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences and the International Society for Nanoscale Science, Computation, and Engineering.

As a member of the Computing Research Association’s Committee on the Status of Women (CRA-W) (1994-2007), Anne worked on several programs to increase the participation and success of women in computing and, while Co-Chair of CRA-W (2000-2003) helped expand CRA-W’s programs to Canada. She held the NSERC/General Motors Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering for British Columbia and the Yukon (2004-2009).
